Youth for Christ reaches 10 year milestone (1998-2008)
Ten years By Darla Neemeyer, Executive Director
God touched a heart. He had plans for Columbus, Nebraska. Jody
McCoy wasn't from Columbus, but she had a burning desire to make
a difference in the lives of the teenage mothers living here. Jody
had been an O.B. nurse in another city and had seen first hand...newborn
babies strapped in the back seat of the car as the teen mom returned
to the only world she knew, being a teenager. As God's touch burned
in her heart, Jody reached out to a friend at church, another advocate
that God had called, Ruth Mueller. Ruth and her husband, Dr. Harry
had been teen advocates in Canada, offering their home to teenage
mothers and offering leadership in a crisis pregnancy center. Jody
and Ruth turned to the Columbus Telegram to take their quest for
a new ministry to the public. Meanwhile, after six years, I had
just quit my job at a local church and Friday was my last day. Two
days later, on Sunday when their article ran in the Sunday paper,
I had my first conversation with my new friends. Who would have
ever dreamed what God had in mind? What had started as a Teen Moms
Ministry grew into a Youth for Christ Chapter with preventive programs
for an average of 300 students each week. The research in 1998 on
youth ages 11-19 in our immediate communities numbered 5000. Last
year, Youth for Christ Columbus reached over 4,900 of them with
free services and the desire to bring about a positive heart-change,
physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually
in every kid in every circumstance in the Columbus, Nebraska area.
